Author and historian Crystal Jackson presents an authentic and compelling account of one town’s epic journey through American history. Since the nation’s founding, Pacoima has served as a microcosm of America’s social development and evolution.

Once known as Pacoinga, this area was sacred land for Indigenous people until Spanish colonization in the late 18th century. From the Mission era and the genocide of local natives to becoming one of the country’s first suburban minority communities, Pacoima’s diverse cultural history is truly unique. Jackson’s powerful book delves into this historic town, uncovering the provocative racial threads that are woven into the fabric of American history.

While some in America sought to marginalize and diminish people of color, Pacoima repeatedly broke free and reached unimaginable heights. Over the past 150 years, its unique blend of cultures—including Native, Latino, Black, Japanese, and White—has defied the odds. The town’s remarkable history reveals irrefutable stories that redefine the social development of America’s minority population.

Jackson dedicated five years to researching the town, interviewing dozens of current and former residents. Among those she spoke with are US Congressman Tony Cárdenas, US Congresswoman Barbara Lee, and California Secretary of State Alex Padilla, all of whom were raised in Pacoima. She also interviewed 90-year-old residents, Indian chiefs, Mexican migrants, families of Japanese internment camp survivors, and civil rights leaders who vividly described the town’s growth and evolution. Despite enduring the loss of Indigenous land, treatment as second-class citizens, forced incarceration, civil rights violations, and a crack epidemic that nearly devastated the community, Pacoima has made a significant impact on both the country and the world.

Notable figures such as Ritchie Valens, Heisman Trophy winner Charles White, actor Danny Trejo, World Boxing Champion Bobby Chacon, and Grammy winner Andráe Crouch all grew up in Pacoima. Their inspiring stories are just a few examples of the fascinating narratives that the town has to offer. Additionally, Pacoima is home to the nation’s first public charter school, the world’s largest earth-filled dam, and the #1 ranked high school football team.

Johnny Carson once made Pacoima a punchline in his routine, perpetuating negative stereotypes about the town. This book reveals a community that many people were unaware of. From its earliest inhabitants to its modern-day presence, the entrance to Pacoima’s incredible story is now open.
