Pacoima, CA - The Pacoima Historical Society (PHS), a cornerstone in the preservation of local history, received a distinguished honor when Congressman Tony Cárdenas awarded the organization the U.S. House of Representatives Certificate of Congressional Recognition. The award, presented during the Society’s Black History Month celebration in 2023, highlights PHS’s vital contributions to documenting and safeguarding the rich, multicultural legacy of Pacoima and the San Fernando Valley.

The event, held at Rancho Cordillera del Norte in Northridge, drew an estimated 200 attendees, including local politicians, celebrities, and community members. Special guests included USC football legend Anthony Davis, State Senator Caroline Menjivar, and LA Councilman John Lee. The festivities featured historical exhibits, music, and a stirring performance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech by Eric Stuart.

Crystal Jackson, president and founding member of the Pacoima Historical Society, delivered a keynote presentation showcasing rare photographs and stories from the area’s African American history. Under her leadership, the Society has worked tirelessly since its founding in 2016 to collect, preserve, and share photographs, oral histories, and artifacts that reflect Pacoima’s 1,500-year history.

“Our goal is to have Pacoima recognized for the historic town it is, not only by Los Angeles, but the entire state of California,” Jackson stated, emphasizing the Society’s mission to ensure the community’s stories are remembered and celebrated.

The Congressional award is just one of many recognitions the Society has received for its efforts. PHS also collaborates with local institutions, hosts community events such as the annual Pacoima Holiday Parade and “Latino Heritage Day,” and supports educational initiatives to shift and expand the narrative of Black and multicultural history in Los Angeles.

As the Pacoima Historical Society continues its work, the Congressional recognition stands as a testament to the enduring importance of community-driven history and the power of preserving local heritage for future generations.
