Crystal Jackson Honored with Congressional Award for Community Leadership and Pacoima's Historic Preservation

Pacoima, CA - Crystal Jackson, president of the Pacoima Historical Society and acclaimed author, was recently recognized with a special Congressional award for her outstanding contributions to preserving the cultural heritage of Pacoima and amplifying the stories of its diverse community.


The honor, presented by Congressman Tony Cárdenas during a Black History Month celebration, marks a significant milestone in Jackson’s career as both a historian and advocate. The Congressional recognition celebrates her leadership in founding the Pacoima Historical Society, her dedication to collecting and safeguarding local artifacts, and her commitment to ensuring that Pacoima’s multicultural legacy is remembered and shared.

Jackson, a film producer and author, has been instrumental in documenting Pacoima’s history through multiple projects. As president of the Society since its founding in 2016, she has spearheaded efforts to create a digital library and establish a museum, preserving photographs, literature, and oral histories from the community’s past. Her work has also included writing the critically acclaimed book,  The Entrance: Pacoima's Story, which brought national attention to the area’s rich history.


The event, held on February 23, 2024 at the Alicia Broadous-Duncan Multipurpose Senior Center, drew an estimated 200 attendees, including local politicians, community leaders, and prominent figures. Congressman Tony Cárdenas hosted the event which also honored the historic 1965 North Valley Broncos baseball team from Pacoima, which featured USC Trojans football legend Anthony Davis. California Assemblymember Luz Rivas was also in attendance.

In her acceptance remarks, Jackson emphasized the importance of community-driven storytelling:

“Our goal is to have Pacoima recognized for the historic town it is, not only by Los Angeles, but the entire state of California,” she stated, highlighting the Society’s mission to promote and preserve the unique stories of Pacoima’s residents.

The Congressional award is a testament to Jackson’s enduring impact on the community and her role in shaping the narrative of Pacoima for future generations.
