Shifting the Narrative: Black LA
On March 1, 2022, PHS President Crystal Jackson presented the local history of Pacoima to LA Unified School District teachers and administrators. In 2025, it will be a graduation requirement to pass an ethnic studies class. The presentation went into extensive, relevant stories so the instructors could get familiar with them and how instructors can incorporate them into the curriculum.
The feedback from the UCLA staff and the teachers ranged from “inspirational” to “amazement.” Many were shocked. They had never heard about Pacoima in this context.
There are future sessions to solidify LAUSD teaching this local history, including Pacoima, to fulfill the mandated requirement of ethnic studies for high school graduation. Pacoima Historical Society is pleased to be a part of this venture.
