The Pacoima Historical Society celebrated Black History Month 2023 with a phenomenal program highlighting African Americans of the San Fernando Valley. Presented in association with the Museum of the SFV, the event featured exhibits, food, vendors, music, entertainers, and special guest speakers.
Attended by an array of politicians and celebrities, the featured guest speaker was USC Football Legend Anthony Davis, who grew up in Pacoima and graduated from San Fernando High School. Also featured on the program was California State Senator Caroline Menjivar, 12th District LA Councilman John Lee, and Eric Stuart, who delivered a special performance of Martin Luther King's speech “I Have a Dream.”
During the program, an official representative of Congressman Tony Cardenas awarded the Pacoima Historical Society with "The US. House of Representatives Certificate of Congressional Recognition" for its contributions to the preservation of the history and culture of Pacoima.
PHS president Crystal Jackson delivered a presentation on the history of Black Americans in the San Fernando Valley, which offered rare photos of the area's history. An estimated 200 people attended the event, which was held at Rancho Cordillera del Norte in Northridge.
